Carlos Cabrera and his wife Aleida do their best to stay in shape. But when they saw their two daughters gaining weight they were concerned. Knowing that there was so much junk food in the lives of their kids, the Cabrera family looked for a way to get and stay healthy. The road to success was a bumpy one. The Cabrera's tried diet after diet but had little success. 8 year old Arielle and 13 year old Aleida, did not show signs of improvement though both parents wanted them to be more lean and healthy.

This summer, Carlos and his wife Aleida had a goal, to rescue their children from the threat of obesity. After listening to a casting call by Florida Hospital on 580 WDBO in Orlando, Carlos applied for his to be participants in the SuperSized Kids 8-week Lifestyle Change Program.

With a combined family weight at 518 pounds, the Cabreras were ready make some changes and live a healthier lifestyle. But one of the major obstacles in the way was screen time. Everyone in the family had a real challenge with the amount of time they spent in front of the TV and computers. Though it was difficult to tear away, the Cabreras have cut back drastically on screen time and are shocked at how inactive the TV and computers made them.

The Cabrera's started small by eating more fruits and vegetables. Then they decided to cut down considerably on the amount of screen time (TV & computers). Also, Carlos and his daughters worked out together in the mornings, 5 times a week at the Celebration Health Fitness Centre.

Their efforts to get and stay healthy have been quite successful. During the 8-week program the family has had to go shopping for new clothes for their daughter Aleida who had gone down one dress size in 4 weeks!

Specifically they found success in:

  • Eating lots of Tofu and less red meat
  • Working out together
  • Enjoying "media free" nights with no TV or computer time

The 8-week program concluded and the results were great! The Cabrera family lost a total of 29 pounds. "This program has had a tremendous influence on our family" write parents Carlos and Aleida. "Our daughters now understand the importance of eating healthy and exercising. In the process it has brought us closer together and has taught us to appreciate the time we spend together." As a family the Cabrera's are also thrilled to report they lost 8 inches in waist circumference. They believe it proves simple changes in lifestyle can go a long way. "Hopefully this is something our daughters will remember and apply as they become adults."
