Henry and Cyndi Knowles don't want their family history to be part of their future. Both of Cyndi's parents and a brother had gastro-bypass surgery. In fact her brother was 404 pounds when he had his. As a family they wanted to avoid the same fate.

Henry heard about the SuperSized Kids 8-week Lifestyle Change Program from Dr. Walt's announcement on 580 WDBO, a local radio station in Orlando. With a combined family weight of 673, this caring family decided it was time to care for their own health.

With the information provided in the book the Knowles family began by eating more fruits and vegetables. They also started substituting water for soda, and saying no to all the desserts they were offered when eating out. They saw great results from those efforts alone, but there was more to come.

Cutting back on time in front of the TV and computer was next on the list. After reading SuperSized Kids and seeing the link between "screen" time and weight gain, the Knowles family turned it off. They used that time instead to have a media free night and go to an evening church service, which brought them closer together as a family.

A challenge came when the Knowles family went to Washington DC on vacation during the 8-week program. Knowing how hard it is to eat healthy when on vacation they tried to compensate by exercising a bit more and walking as much as possible. Arriving back home they started working out at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando. At "Kids Stuff" in the RDV, 10 year old Ashley stays fit while playing hockey, and her twin sister Bethany stays healthy by climbing the rock wall. Meanwhile Henry and his wife Cyndi encourage each other while on treadmills.

Specifically they found success in:

  • Getting the whole family involved in going to the gym
  • Eating more fruits and vegetables -- even their pickiest daughter
  • Having a media free night
  • Spending more family time together
  • Walking instead of riding whenever possible (especially on vacation)

The Knowles family has seen tremendous results. In eight short weeks the family lost a total of 49 pounds! Henry's blood pressure dropped dramatically. The Knowles family also boasts a loss of eight inches in waist circumference.

SuperSized Kids has helped the Knowles clarify the importance of being a happy and healthy family as well as giving guidance to help their children reduce the risk of obesity.
