Angel Lopez is a single father with 2 children, Angel III, age 13, and Aimee, age 11. He wanted to find a way to motivate his children to start taking better care of their health and rescue them from the obesity threat.

In 1988 Angel was injured in a terrible motorcycle accident. In a coma for seven days he was given steroid based drugs for his treatment. The reaction to the steroids was fast and lasting. Angel began gaining weight. Lots of weight. Not a tall man, Angel became very concerned when at 5'4" he was tipping the scale at 350 pounds. Amazed and worried by his weight gain Angel decided to have gastric bypass surgery. For a short period of time it worked. Angel dropped from 350 pounds down to 200 pounds. But soon after, Angel began putting on weight once again.

With a family weight of 549 pounds, Angel was looking for something that would help motivate him and his children to make permanent lifestyle changes and reduce the obesity threat.

Angel III heard an announcement on Channel 2 news in Orlando about an 8-week program that he thought would help his family get on the right track. Angel (dad) saw an opportunity that he wasn't sure would come round again. So the Lopez family applied for the SuperSized Kids 8-week Lifestyle Change Program. When Angel was told they had been selected to participate, the father replied in an emotion-tinged voice, "thanks so much for being an advocate for my family."

During the first meeting Angel III realized that this program would not be so easy for him. He loves to watch TV and play video games -- which both have a link to weight gain. Sherri Flynt, co-author of SuperSized Kids explained to him a good way to start would be to play outside for 30 minutes then he could have 30 minutes of screen time. Father and son agreed to the plan. After that discussion things seemed to run more smoothly in the Lopez home.

In addition to the healthier balance of screen time versus play time the whole family has made an effort to choose healthier food when they eat out. Also Angel Sr. and Angel III enjoy the Body Combat class at a local health club. Angel III has a goal of being able to do an entire workout without stopping. Meanwhile Aimee worked out at the kid's gym at the Celebration Health Fitness Centre.

Specifically they found success in:

  • An intense exercise program that included Body Combat and Spinning classes at the gym
  • Completing several "screen free" nights
  • Ate more whole grains and proteins
  • Agreed to an equal ratio of outdoor play time and screen time

The results after eight weeks are nothing less than remarkable. The Lopez family lost 42 total pounds! SuperSized Kids helped the Lopez family by providing guidelines to follow and helpful ideas to motivate the family on becoming more active and healthy. Together they are determined to keep their newly formed lifestyle!
